Now I will admit that this book has caused me some confusion - The book I have is titled Arrival and looks like the one above - so you think the ISBN is correct however it appears that it also goes under the name of Stories of your life and others and was in fact retitled to coincide with the film of said title.
Now normally I do not mind these things but it does make me a little sceptical as I have been caught out in the past - the worst of all was with the works of Michael Cordy. Anyway I digr ...more

This is simply the best collection of short stories I've read all year. Marvelous.
Tower of Babylon - 5 stars, winner of Nebula 1990
Understand - 4 stars
Division By Zero - 3 stars
Story of Your Life - 5 stars, left me breathless
Seventy-Two Letters - 4 stars
This short story has no separate entry on GR. This is a wonderful steampunk story, of Victorian science, kabalistic mysticism, and the quest to create and understand, human life.
The Evolution of Human Science - 3 stars
Hell is the Absence of God ...more

And by the way, I love the title of this book, how it incorporates one of the titles of the short stories and explains exactly what this collection is at the same time. Brilliant.

It's amazing how Ted Chiang can write diverse themes: medicine, mathematics, linguistics, physics, magic, religion, a reteling of a myth, you name it. Some are harder to understand (blame it on my lack of knowledge), but I like the way he assumes that the readers are able to sufficiently comprehend it, without going on and on explaining things. I particularly like the one titled "Liking what you see: a documentary" because of its documentary style and inventiveness.
