I tried so hard. But I'm calling it quits at 85%. The final hour it would take to finish this book is a waste of time. I'm not going to like it any better, and if one more woman shows up wanting to fuck Severian, I'm going to rip my own hair out. I think I'll read summaries of the last two books in the series, just to see what all the fuss is about, but other than that, I'm done. ...more

I first read this when it came to my local library with the Bruce Pennington cover. This would've been the mid 1980's, so I was in my middle teens.

While it had a profound impact on me at the time, mostly down to the *difference* of the writing. I confess that I understood little of Severian's continued journey.

I re-read this in my 20s, and again, while being impressed by Wolfe's fluidity, I confess I recall little from that time.
