While 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of the more familiar titles in literature, I have to admit my familiarity with it comes less from the literary work of Jules Verne and more from the big-screen adaptation by Walt Disney. (And to some lesser extent, the now defunct ride at both American Disney theme parks). Growing up, the film's climatic battle with the squid was featured on numerous Wonderful World of Disney clips show.

When I simply read this book without considering the historical facts it appeared lacking. I was expecting something more to happen while the men were under the sea;perhaps finding Atlantis or another world inhabited by humans. However, when I took into affect that everything Vernes discussed was not yet invented, it makes me look at the book in a different light. This book prophesized the advent of the submarine and many other technological advances.

I know it's a classic, but I was bored out of my mind when I read this book. Maybe I'll have to give it another go.
