The epic start to a classic fantasy epic. This one has been sitting on my TBR for about 35 years, so it was about time to get it read. I can see the influence of this book's themes on countless fantasy books, with a brooding Elric, a powerful sentient sword, the machinations of higher powers on mortals, the epic quest, the destiny. Michael Moorcock's six-book "Elric Saga" is one of the great classics of high fantasy, dark fantasy, and sword & sorcery. Its characters, environments, and obstacles are among the genre's most memorable and influential. Elric is the archetypal anti-hero and one of the most recognizable figures of the genre.

As I'm rereading some Elric stories I just noticed that in 2008 I rated this as 1* but without leaving any note as to why. That's absurd and must have been an error since I'd read this in approx 2000/01 and enjoyed some of the stories but found others a little overstuffed and lacking discipline without being compellingly weird. My 21 yr old self I think would have rated it 3* for the good stuff, though I can see how in 2008 I may have felt jaded by some of this stuff and I recall not enjoying Co
