I have mixed feelings about this book. It took me multiple attempts to finish it, but I'm glad I did. Someone compared this to Buffy and Angel as far as the romance aspects. Do not believe that. This book has some romantic aspects, but it's more of a coming of age story (although Sunshine is an adult when it starts). She's coming into her powers that she never really understood.

This is, without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite books. I don't quite know why, other than maybe it combines things I love into an intelligent, well-written vampire book.

McKinley details a frightening world where vampires hold a majority of the world's wealth, and will basically inherit the earth in less than a year. Or maybe two years, I can't quite remember. An absolute masterpiece! Not because it is high literature or blows you wide open, but because it tells a story in a way that it may have never been told before with one of the most amazing, humorous, and self-deprecating narrators I have experienced.

The gist of the story is that Sunshine is a cinnamon roll baker extraordinaire that happens to get kidnapped by vampires, save another vampire from the kidnappers, and discovers her magic. It is no ordinary vampire tale, love story, or fantasy novel
