In the beginning I thought I have difficulties getting into this book, however this changed very quickly and I had to redeem my opinion. Actually, it had only been the first 40 pages (approx) that I felt a bit lost, which was mostly due to the fact that I had no clue what e.g. a gele was and I had to look up a few things. I mean obviously it contains things from a different culture and since I've never read or never engaged in this topic I was a bit clueless. Combine this with a fantasy world yo ...more

This book really disappointed me. It was hyped, especially for bringing diversity into fantasy. A promise it doesn't fulfil completely. Unfortunately, there are way too few Nigerian cultural references in this book. There are only occasional Yoruba sentences and a few mentions of jollof rice, but not much else.
There is also not a lot of original thought in its characters and plot.
