In the beginning I thought I have difficulties getting into this book, however this changed very quickly and I had to redeem my opinion. Actually, it had only been the first 40 pages (approx) that I felt a bit lost, which was mostly due to the fact that I had no clue what e.g. a gele was and I had to look up a few things. I mean obviously it contains things from a different culture and since I've never read or never engaged in this topic I was a bit clueless. I mean obviously it contains things from a different culture and since I've never read or never engaged in this topic I was a bit clueless. Combine this with a fantasy world you just get to know and it seemed a bit much at first. But as I already said: It was fine after 40 to 50 pages.

I really like that the twist and turns, everything that was hinted at, was straight to the point. There wasn't any long guessing. Nothing where I felt like: "How can you not realise this? It's so obvious!" E.g. the dream in which Zélie and Inan came together.

I love Amari and Tzain together! They're so cute and I love how playful they are with each other. And I found it wonderful when the same playfulness entered the relationship between Tzain and Zélie. However, it's sad that these moments were rare. I could feel how strongly Tzain cares about his sister. But this caring turned into worrying so often, as he feels responsible for keeping her safe, and their feelings over their mother's death seem to stand in between them simply because they try to cope with this loss seperately and each for themselves instead of talking about it and helping each other.

The development between Zélie and Inan in the other hand seemed a bit abrupt. One second they were fighting and the next there was this romantic tension between them. It felt rushed. But at the same time I also liked reading how Inan stared at her and how both of them perceived each other so differently after fighting with each other and working together to rescue the people they love. I understand that this was a big moment and that it changed perspectives. I was a little torn at first...
Then, however, I had a change of mind while reading! When Zélie asks what's on Inan's mind and he showed her I realised that I do like them together.
It's just the dynamics between Zélie and Inan and Amari and Tzain are completely different. Amari and Tzain have this pure and very sweet thing going on while Zélie and Inan's dynamic is more intense. But no two relationships are the same and it turned out I like that the author evokes these different feelings in her readers.

The plot of the general story was fantastic in my eyes. Nothing was dragged out, every plot point had the perfect length in my eyes. And there was so much going on, very action-packed, very fast-paced, but it felt exactly right to me. And even though there were all these smaller plot points you could see how they served a purpose and the book never lost sight of the main plot. There was this very clear silver lining woven throughout the story and I liked following it in every little detail.

I'm a bit disappointed of the ending, because it felt way to abrupt and I don't really understand what's going on? I mean what was that supposed to mean? And now I have to wait almost a year to finally get answers to all the questions floating in my mind and I'm just... ugh. :( I want to have the next book already... ...more

Shelves: fantasy, novel, magic

This book really disappointed me. It was hyped, especially for bringing diversity into fantasy. A promise it doesn't fulfil completely. Unfortunately, there are way too few Nigerian cultural references in this book. There are only occasional Yoruba sentences and a few mentions of jollof rice, but not much else.
There is also not a lot of original thought in its characters and plot.
