Deeper Than Midnight (Midnight Breed, #9) in KLB Virtual Events

I guess expectations are everything. I’ve been looking forward to Hunter’s book since his first appearance on page. But some of my fellow reviewers warned me that his book might let me down. So I started the story expecting very little and ended up pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t exactly the story I expected, but I enjoyed it.

The reason I was so jazzed about Hunter having a book is because he is both a tortured hero who has never known love, and he’s a virgin. Both are right up my alley. The thing is, though, this book wasn’t about Hunter so much as it was about his heroine. Of course, we get time with him, but Corinne was the real focus here. That’s why it wasn’t what I expected and probably why some readers were disappointed. The virginity part was very understated. And the tortured hero/ loveless life thing was not very angsty. Most of the feels we got came from Corinne.

We met the heroine at the end of the last book. She was one of the Breedmates rescued from Dragos’ compound. As this story begins, all she wants is to return home to her family. Hunter offers to bring her there. He sees something of a kindred spirit in Corinne –and a quiet strength. The more time he spends with her, the more he learns of the depths of her suffering. At the same time, he begins to feel things with her he has never felt in his life, both physically and emotionally. This, as he hides the vision he saw of her in little Mira’s eyes.

As we learn more about Corinne’s history, it’s impossible not to sympathize with her and her loss. And it was very easy to root for her match with Hunter. I was kind of surprised at how easy it was for her to open up to him sexually with her history of rape. It was really the only part of the romance that gave me pause, because, honestly it was a bit easy. Not what you’d think for two lost souls such as this.

We spend a lot of time with cutaways to Sterling Chase. My guess is that his book is next. Now there is some guaranteed angst. This guy is so messed up. But honestly, I found myself a bit annoyed at how much time his downward spiral took away from the romance. Hopefully, that will pay off in the next installment.

Overall, it was a fairly good read, but it didn’t bowl me over. And I found the end a little abrupt (for the second book in a row. Is this a new thing with the series?)

Deeper Than Midnight starts out with Corinne wanting to go home and see her family after being missing for 70 plus years. Brock, her former bodyguard and member of the Order, is not available so Hunter volunteers to see her home. This confuses Hunter but his protective instincts have been triggered by this woman and he is forced to see it through.

When Hunter and Corinne arrive at her home, Hunter instantly senses something is wrong. When the truth is revealed about Corinne’s abduction, the results are devastating. Hunter takes Corinne with him into hiding once it becomes clear that Dragos will do anything to get her back. Through all this the Order receives information that it’s secret location has been breached and they now scramble to prepare for a war that is coming straight to their front door.

I waited a long time for Hunter’s story. From the first moment we met him, his story has promised to be a huge one. One of Dragos’s Gen One experiments, his whole life was spent alone and isolated-training to become the efficient killer he is today. Only through the friendship of a young child was Hunter able to break free of Dragos’s control and start to build a life of his own with the Order. You can’t help but feel protective of this man. Never having felt the soft touch of kindness, friendship, or love, he is remarkably sane and in control. When he meets and spends time Corinne, unknown feelings and desires surface; things he was taught never to feel for they are weaknesses.

His touch traveled along the tilt of his chin, then skated softly across her lips. “Intimacy was forbidden. It was a weakness to want physical contact. It was a flaw to desire anything, especially pleasure.” He kissed her again, a low growl rumbled deep in his chest. “I never knew what it was to crave a woman’s touch. Or to hunger for a woman’s kiss.”

“And now you do?” she asked hesitantly.

“Since I met you, Corinne Bishop, I’ve been thinking of little else.”

While we don’t know much about Corinne, what we learn is just as heartbreaking. Held captive and tortured by Dragos and his minions for years, she managed to maintain her sanity and will to survive through sheer strength. I found her to be the perfect match for Hunter. He needed some who could lead him through the darkness and into the light and Corinne does. While she is not a warrior in the true sense; she is strong, intelligent, and willing to fight for those she loves.

As we follow Hunter and Corinne we get a lot of Dragos POV for which I was grateful for. We haven’t been able to see much from his POV and I like the in-depth view we get. We see what he is up to and where this all might eventually lead to. Chase (the breed bad boy) also plays heavily in this story. A little to heavily in my opinion. At times, his storyline over shadowed Hunter’s. Chase has been slowly giving into the rage and bloodlust for awhile now and we follow him as he begins his descent into madness. I felt in order to give us a stepping stone into Chase’s book, Hunter and Corinne’s HEA was rushed and incomplete. Everything ended nice and neat.

All in all though, I enjoyed seeing Hunter finally find the happiness he so deserved. Deeper Than Midnight stays true to form with plenty of action, suspense, and romance as we slowly make our way to the final showdown with Dragos.

Deeper Than Midnight features the romantic coupling of Corinne and Hunter. She was held prisoner by the evil Draco for 75 years, subject to his ungodly breeding experiments. He is the outcome of said experiments, but escaped Draco’s lair for freedom with the Order. Knowing all of this, it is understandable when I tell you that their romance took a long time to develop. At almost halfway through the book there was still no spark between the couple - other than a heated glance.

Newest edition to The Midnight Breeds series.

The series gets better and better with each new book. I started this one not even knowing which Male it would be about. I was very pleased to see it was Hunter. Created to be a killing machine, I enjoyed watching him ponder the new and un-chartered territory of feelings, emotions, desire and then love. Corinne is wounded, clearly, but she is drawn to Hunter. The scariest of all Male's to be comfortable with, yet it's him.

Here we are, 9 books in and we finally get Hunter’s story. Hunter is a Breed male created to be a warrior for the evil Dragos. A few books ago we witnessed him changing sides and becoming a part of the warrior group that fights protect the civilian Breeds and keep the peace and now, in Deeper Than Midnight, he finally gets his HEA.

I enjoyed this book a lot but I didn't love this book the way I love so many others by this author. I felt very disconnected from the main characters. This was supposed to be Hunter and Corrine's story but it just didn't feel like it. It felt as if they were more a side story while the main story was everything that was going on with The Order. They just seemed to be overshadowed by everyone else.
