I really didn't know much about Ida B. Wells-Barnett until I read this outstanding children's book. Not only was the text informative and interesting, but the illustrations flowed from page to page and were filled at times with striking, symbolic images. My favorite picture, on page 14, is of a black man have bowed over, straining to push against a giant white hand attached to an sleeve that says "Whites only". It's a striking image, and gets the idea of Jim Crow across in seconds.
