This is one of my favorite Nora Roberts books. Actually, the first time I read it, I thought it was good, but didn't love it. But for whatever reason, the story stuck in my head and I found myself wanting to read it again. So I did, about a year later, I guess. And it became one of my favorites.

The book has a little bit of everything, which is perhaps why I like it so much. Love and betrayal, family reunions, horses, mystery, self-discovery...and so much more. I enjoy the story alone because of ...more

Okay, so that was pretty good as far as NR's suspense romances go. I'd say I liked about half of them more and half of them less than this book. The narrator was pretty good though, so there is that!

I thought the race horses were really interesting. I thought the gambling would bother me, but there just wasn't that much of it. The people (and horses *sadface*) getting killed made for an intriguing suspense element. I knew just enough of both sides (good and bad) to keep me satisfied wit 3.5 stars

I knew just enough of both sides (good and bad) to keep me satisfied without being able to figure out how all the pieces came together in the end. (Whereas some books, you feel like you know nothing and are just in the dark the whole time, which gets frustrating, since you don't feel like it's even possible to figure it out... OR some books where you know EVERYTHING and then it's not very suspenseful...)

The romance was LOVELY. Kelsey and Gabe were SO GREAT together! Like, really really fantastic. That was the best part of the book, without a doubt.

My least favorite part: Her grandmother. I wanted to punch her in the throat every single time she opened her mouth. Are there really people like that? (I bet there are.) I really REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hope I never meet one. I know that murder is wrong and that I'd be SO screwed if I killed someone (both legally and spiritually), and I honestly don't think I could do it if it weren't self-defense. But WOW. I... just WOW. I think I would disown MYSELF and move far, far away just so I wouldn't have to speak to her EVER again. And her STEPMOM? I didn't think she was much better! Kelsey, Gabe, Channing, and Phillip obviously liked her, but I didn't. I'd go off to college and never come back. EVER. It's funny... I was a very obedient child and even teenager, really. But if someone tried to control me like that? Ooooh, baby. I'm one of those people you can push and push and push, and I'll take it, but if you push me over the line, you're gonna regret it. And with a family like that, my line would be like 6 inches away from me. I'd yell... A lot. SRSLY.

ANYWAY, I suppose since the grandmother is supposed to be a stone-cold bitch, Nora did a fantastic job writing her. I wasn't at ALL surprised when (view spoiler), but it COMPLETELY PISSED ME OFF that (view spoiler) BULL$HIT! And to top it off, (view spoiler)!!! There's forgiveness and then there's just plain stupidity, and this ending definitely landed in the latter category.

I was glad to discover I haven't yet read all of NR's hard cover books...but bummed to see that it was about a subject (horse racing/breeding) she'd also covered in some Silhouette romance versions as well...still enjoyed it though but not as much as I could have.... ...more

Nora Roberts is one of my favorite writers, but in this book her pacing of the story seems to be off. Even when she isn't so good, Roberts is still better than most. ...more
