First a plane crash - then a month without any food but his dead companions.
Survival in the wilderness doesn't always end with a rescue.
I thought the fact that he kept her hand with the rings was very significant. The rings were his last link to her as a living person. He had to eat the rest.
The fact that he was nameless gave it a sense of impending doom from the start.
