I picked this book after it won the Hugo. I was expecting good things, considering that it won over Wheel of Time, but wasn't expecting it to be this good.
This book would have been notable if only it were for the little things:
- The protagonist of the book is a spaceship.
- Everyone's a she (in speaking)
- War crimes, phiolosophy
- Omniscient AI's POV
But it really raises the stakes by actually pulling it off. The story never breaks, the plot is excellent, the characters sympathetic, and the world-b ...more

A solid 4 stars as one of my friends said. Though I was thinking more like 3 when I was half way through it. I often forget just how much exposition must happen with serious speculative science fiction (unlike serious space opera science fiction)- a whole hell of a lot, like more than half the book as in this case. I'm glad that everybody who reviewed it made a point of how slow a start this thing had or I may have given up on it; I'm glad I didn't. I'm really looking forward to the next install
