The following was my 1st review when I read this in 2014. I enjoy reading this series. This time in 2017 I read it in the bundle Heroes and Witches Urban Fantasy.
This is a book of change. Zoe goes out clubbing with her best friend Summer. Summer collects all of the attention. Zoe leaves early, she's tired and she chooses to take a short cut from the station to her apartment. She is attacked. This is a book of change. Zoe goes out clubbing with her best friend Summer. Summer collects all of the attention. Zoe leaves early, she's tired and she chooses to take a short cut from the station to her apartment. She is attacked. Whatever he is doing to her is painful and she feels scorched from the inside out. She fights him and he becomes enraged and slits her throat. Next thing she knows she wakes up in a body bag in the back of an ambulance. She claws herself free and runs. She is found, bloody and exhausted by Adam. He takes her home and takes care of her. But Zoe drastically changes while there - size, shape, hair and eye color. When she is able to get to the bathroom and sees herself she is shocked. Adam sees the changes as well. He becomes her rock and safety net. When they start to make love, she shocks him with a current of power, and she is scared.
Justus finds her and tells her she is a Mage and demands to know who her creator is. It is up to a Creator to train his progeny. Zoe wants nothing to do with the sadistic murdering creator. Justus takes her before the Council of Mages and requests that he be named her Guardian. She goes to live with Justus. She finds him cold. They train physically, but he only teaches her defense, not offense, something she complains about constantly. She reads the history of the Mage, learning more of her kind.
Simon is a good friend of Justus' and he shows up. Zoe, now known as Learner, finds warmth and humor in Simon that she has missed since Adam, and seems to be totally absent in Justus. They become close, and they share energy as only Mages can, only interrupted by Justus before they can complete the sex.
Justus tells her that her creator has asked the Council to have her returned to him. She goes ballistic wanting nothing to do with her murderer. But the Council grants Samil, her creator, his rights to her for 1 week and then the Council will reconvene. Samil is the sadistic monster she remembers. He locks her in his basement. No furniture, a pile of moldy blankets her only bedding. He starves her, beats her, and allows a Mage to take her light and beat her. By the end of the week she just wants to die. Samil has promised to sell her to the Mage that keeps taking her energy, weakening her, beating her, and insisting they will have sex as well. She knows she is going from bad to worse. But one night near the end of the week Samil binds her and takes her to a secluded place. She is able to tell Simon where they are driving. Samil takes her energy and is in the process of raping her, letting her know he plans to kill her, she is just too much trouble - she dares to fight him with everything she has at every turn since the beginning.
Simon and Justus find her, take her away and heal her. They have to return her to the Council where Samil will again demand that she be returned to him. Someone can challenge him in a battle, winner gets her. It is a crime for a Mage to kill another Mage, but Justus knows unless Samil is killed, Zoe, the learner, named before the Council by her creator as Silver, will never be safe. Plots are hatched and she is not told until at the last minute. The challenger is a surprise to the Council. They agree to a fight to the death. But does anyone survive the fight? How can she live with the innocent blood on her hands? Into whose hands does her life and training get handed by the Council whom she is starting to really hate.
This was a very intense book. I enjoyed it for that reason. It is the 1st in "A Mageri Series" and I found it in the "Magic After Dark Boxed Set". I also have bought the 2nd named "Twist". I can't wait to see what happens to Silver next. The Mageri world intersects with other Breeds, including Vampires - one tries unsuccessfully to pick her up in a Breed Bar. ...more

I was pleasantly surprised by this book....maybe I shouldn't have been though because all the reviews I read on B&N were outstanding.
The world building was easy to follow without the typical over kill.
Sterling is likeable although she's a bit stubborn. And Raze, Simon,and Justus are to talk cool and I like them in the order listed. Raze was her true hero though and I really really liked him.
