This is a teaser fill in short story featuring Raphael & Cyn and a bridge book between 'Duncan' and 'Lucas' due out soon. This book gives a back story to introduce Raphael's new lieutenant Jared and explain Raphael's connection with Lucas. Of course this wouldn't be a DB Reynolds book if a challenge/murder attempt wasn't there and this book is no different.

Cyn and Raphael are visiting one of Raphael's territory in Colorado. Someone takes a shot at Raphael which greatly upsets Cyn. Cyn wants vengeance and blood for the hurt her heart endured thinking of Raphael coming to harm. Cyn meets Raphael's replacement for Duncan~Jared Lincoln but she'll reserve judgement if he's truly suitable. Raphael knows this is spillover from Lucas and Klemens war. Short...Sweet and didn't miss a beat. I savor every word she writes. Even for a short story like this she is able envoke such emotion from me. Love this series and everyone of the characters.

This short brings in a replacement for Duncan as Raphael’s lieutenant; provides a bit of background for Lucas and reminds us of Sophia’s place in the hierarchy, so it is perfectly placed and actually does have a purpose (other than bringing us up to date on the sex between Cyn & Raphael).
I’m pretty sure this was the last novella I’ll read for the series (if there are more) and I definitely didn’t like it as much as some readers. At first I liked Cyn and Raphael and though ...more

packed short story. Introduces Lucas and his relationship and how he fits into Raphael's world. An attempt is made on Raphael's life in Colorado, and Lucas shows up shortly after to check on him. Raphael and his people go back to California where another attempt is made. This story leads into the next book.
