I was in the mood for a new series I could sink my teeth into and become addicted over, but apparently this isn't going to be it.

'Tempting Danger' starts well enough - there's a murder, a mystery, a paranormal introduction...but then it adopts the cookie-cutter mold approach.

Rule and Lily are mated together as destined, but it's kind of the most boring bonding I've seen. Her being his 'Chosen' comes out of nowhere and neither seem that happy about it at first, other than some typical u ...more

Not a bad read...not bad at all. In fact I found it easy to read, with a nice pace to the story line with some moderately interesting characters both primary and secondary.

I like the heroine...she is spunky and determined...I love seeing things through her eyes. Right away I hate the hero...but am drawn to him....just like "Det. Yu" is....

The differences between the Human and Were worlds is really interesting and what a great parallel to race relations in the United States. The auth ...more

Detective Lily Yu's prime murder suspect is the werewolf "prince" Rule Turner.

What I enjoyed:
* Lily is a great character with an interesting family. She is tough but fair.
* We don't learn a ton about Rule and the Lupi community yet, but what we do is intriguing
* Lily's grandmother is THE BEST
* Lots of cop politics as they deal with Lupi (who haven't had rights for very long) and a cult
* Can't wait to read more about Cullen

What could have been better:
* The whole bond thing is a bit convenient

Tempting Danger is a fabulous five star, out of this world, first book in the urban fantasy World of the Lupi series by Eileen Wilks and and instant fav! I can't wait to immerse myself into the next book and really pleased it's such a long and rich series!

In a nutshell it has a vivid and beautifully described universe that felt very real to me, the world building is on a par with Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, which I also adore. In a nutshell it has a vivid and beautifully described universe that felt very real to me, the world building is on a par with Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, which I also adore. It has great characters with believable reactions, even in fantastic situations. Then there's a solid plot that's not too convoluted as to trip up the necessary world building and character development, but stood well as a story, where many first series novels do not.

The characterisations were spot on, especially for Lily and Rule. Neither were written in an over the top manner, their charm and beauty unfolded with each turn of the page, rather than dazzling outright. Lily is strong willed, dedicated and a little bit broken, she took no prisoners, but wasn't an unapproachable kick ass, nor a simpering victim. She dealt with situations as best she could, prioritising the case over her personal life and stubbornly avoiding dealing with messy emotions as much as possible. Rule is sexy, dominant in a quiet way, humourous, gentle (especially with women) and loving, with a hint of vulnerability that was revealed slowly. A powerful alpha who understands he doesn't need to control a woman to prove he's a man. He's used to getting his way and found Lily somewhat stubborn and obstinate at times, yet understood it and grew to respect her greatly. Some might find that boring, but for me they felt more real and it was great getting to know them gradually within the events of the plot. (view spoiler)

There's a nice complement of secondary characters who were well realised as well as being key to moving along the plot to the big showdown. I fell in love with Cullen and Grandmother almost as much as Lily and Rule. Wilks definitely put a lot of work into laying the groundwork for sequels and an expanded universe with her cast of characters, the swathes of backstory hinted at and the wonderfully mixed up mythology/history.

Synopsis
Set in an alternate California where magical beings are a reality, but much persecution has left most magical beings hiding their nature and not afforded the same rights as straight humans. That's all about to change for werewolves known collectively as the 'Lupi'. A citizenship bill in congress has the power to award Lupi full citizenship regardless of whether they are on two or four legs and the influential Nokolai clan of Lupi are supporting it. There are forces opposed to the possibilities of change, some fuelled by religious hatred and racism who will stop at nothing to hurt or disgrace key leaders of the Nokolai clan to undermine the citizenship bill.
