To encourage socialization, Tom’s mother enrolls him in a summer camp, where he’ll be forced to make friends and face his anger and insecurities. After the other campers find out about his artificial leg, it’s too much for Tom and he leaves the campsite on his own. Not knowing the trails, he stumbles into what seems like an old well. His new friends Mackenzie, a bossy but sweet girl, the skeptical Dean, and the camp dog Brady go after him. What the three kids and the yellow Labrador discover will change their lives forever: a portal into the extraordinary world of Nyi.

Baj’s descriptions of the magical realm of Nyi are attention grabbing, even vivid in some places . . . . The strength in this novel lies in its premise: A boy who feels physically incomplete is transported to an extraordinary place, where he learns to manipulate actions and objects with the power of his mind. Tom begins to feel whole again while fighting for his survival and that of his friends, and Nyi. During his quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy and save Nyi from the evil forces intent on its destruction, Tom learns to accept loss, and take on the new challenges he has faced since the accident.

Baj is a talented storyteller and entwines one boy’s struggle to accept loss with the future of all depending on him fighting for their very lives. Through this struggle, readers will enjoy his growth and development as a character, while losing themselves in the fantastic realm of Nyi and the dragon-like creatures known as Nyiars. . . . there is a twist at the end that will leave readers content and looking forward to the sequel.

We really liked this one -- my daughter read it with me and my son is just finishing it now. We really liked the ending especially and how the suspense and momentum built as the book went along. Toward the end we couldn't stop reading it. Lots of action and good overall story. Just the right amount of magic -- not too overly fantasy world if you know what I mean. We also loved the characters and how they changed over the course of the book. We will definitely check out the next in the series whe ...more
