This book started off so wonderfully. I really enjoyed the first person narrative, especially during the first half of the book when David is a young child. There was so much innocence portrayed in his observations, which ranged from humorous to horrifying. I fully expected to rate this 5 stars for much of the book. I love this book. When I was assigned the book in my high school english class (way back in the 70's) I was overwhelmed by the shear bulk and i put off reading it till it was close to being due. I recall cramming the end of book into a few nights. I was totally blown away with the shear emotional depth of the novel. It was the first novel to move me to tears. I told my friend that when I read David Copperfield, I become so enchanted with his beautiful words that somehow I illogically believe that if I just took pen to hand, I could write just like him! Ha! He draws me into his world-- almost touching his characters. He somehow leaves me with tenderness and hope for my own world. He seems to write the perfect ending.
