Carr makes some good points, and I know school librarians love him, but what he says is obvious to anyone who has a mind and a computer. We all struggle to maintain the long attention spans we have spent our lives developing, and now along come texting, web-surfing, Facebook, Outlook and Eudora's chimes that we have email, and the whole phalanx of long attention-span attackers. This was a 2010 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, though it lost to The Emperor of All Maladies. It was an absolutely fascinating read. It starts with a very basic speculation on "what the internet is doing to our brains" and then pulls you into the world of neurology, describing plasticity and phantom limb syndrom and really giving you the basics before bringing it back to present-day internet and what that does.
