I couldn't get past the pretentiousness of the book. These sort of clever short stories were brought together in the end by a clever coincidence. The allusion to Mrs. Dalloway seemed a bit contrived. And who knew that everyone's problem in life was that they were actually gay, or lesbian, or in love with a gay, or a lesbian in love with a gay man, or non-gay, non-lesbian child of gay or lesbian parents. Let's face it, I read a lot of crap -- the literary equivalent of junk food. (On the plus side, it keeps me from watching the "Green Acres" marathon on TV Land.) Because of my inferior reading habits, I REALLY wanted to like the short, Pulitzer prize winning novel by Mr. Cunningham. Ouch. I can't remember if I read the book before the movie or vice versa but I thought both were great. I loved the way the stories all intertwine although it was a bit hard to follow at first. All the characters are longing for something else, something more in a way that made my heart hurt.
