This was a book club selection so I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but I loved it. Maybe partly because I live near Kansas City and Leavenworth where the Harvey family lived. I would never have thought that food would have had such a big impact on American history. This was great for learning about the settling of the West after the Civil War. I wish Harvey Houses and Hotels were still in operation, but it goes to show that when they don't build it future generations tend to get lazy. ...more

I enjoyed this book, but as mentioned by others it slows some as it approaches recent years. Very thorough and contained some interesting details which I didn't know. As a Topeka resident, the early Kansas history was especially interesting. ...more
