A 13 year old boy in a small town in Minnesota in 1961 should have had a carefree summer, full of trips to the swimming hold and drugstore for a root beer. But Frank Drum's summer turns out to be anything but carefree. It begins with the death of a fellow class mate, then the death of a homeless drifter. Frank's father is a minister and Frank and his younger brother Jake tag along as he conducts funeral services, visits troubled families, and bails his church janitor out of jail. We are taken to the summer of 1961 when the times are simpler. Yet there is death, suicide, and murder - so really are times much better. The story is focused on 13 year old Frank, but there are a few times we hear from adult Frank which made me think of the movie A Christmas Story. The book is well done and engaging.

How did this book find me? Krueger will be at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library later this month and I wanted to read his books before attending.

This book started off slow for me, and I wasn't sure whether I was going to like it or not. About a third of the way through things started picking up and built to what I consider a great and satisfying ending.
