No doubt, James Baldwin had a mastery of the English language. There is a lilt to his words that echoes the classics of literature. With its religious theme, Go Tell It on the Mountain nearly comes across seamlessly as another testament of the Bible. I believe this was Baldwin's intention, but if not he succeeded without trying. This book is beautifully written. I think I may have done an injustice to this book doing the audio version, as many times I thought that was worded beautifully. The topic is faith which is challenging as we all tend to hold slightly different beliefs even when we are all Christian.

How did I find this book? I have been seeing James Baldwin's name for awhile. This made the 1001 Books to Read Before Y0u Die List and the 200 Best Novels in English Since 1950 (note ends in 1998) by Colm Toibin. ...more

I love Baldwin's essays, obviously, and I read Giovanni's Room and really enjoyed it. This was certainly not a bad book--some beautiful use of descriptive language, for one thing--but for whatever reason it never really drew me in completely. just wasn't my thing i guess? ...more
