This book has been called the "unsurpassed modern masterpiece of romantic suspense," so I was looking forward to it. It was really good, but I found it hard to get into at first. Du Maurier spends a lot of time laying down groundwork for the climax which is very different from the fast-paced novels of today. But it was well worth the effort and when I reached midpoint, I couldn't put it down.

I thought this improved with age. That opening chapter is just amazing. Wonderful exploration of subjectivity, and that intense longing to delve another person's thoughts. This seems like the antidote to Austen in many ways.
