What Members Thought

This book is so personal, so insightful about the human condition that I often thought I was reading autobiography. I loved Marion, really loved his huge heart, his tears, his "courage in the sticking place", his intelligence and his growing up. The characters in this book make up a misfit band at "Missing" hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It's true, and the narrator says so, that most Americans think of Ethiopia and think of a dessert strewn with skeletal humans sporting bloated bellies. Ther

The story is told very well, but after it was all over I felt like it was all for nothing. I learned more about life in Ethiopia but didn't really connect with the Marion-Shiva bond, nor the inclusion of Genet into the mix. The most interesting was the development of the relationship between Hema and Gosh, their love for each other, their boys and the people they worked with at Missing Hospital.

I will admit this book did move very slow, however, it seems like that is a pace for books that take place in Africa. This has lots of background and character development. I felt I really knew the majority of the characters in the book. There were some unexpected twists and turns, and even one that touched very close to my heart. While slow paced it does come together.

What a book!! I know I complained about how long it was, and it was. But it all came together and I didn't want it to end. Great book, great writing. This book is very detailed and it was important to try and remember the details as it all came together at the end.

This was the book I saved to read in the heat of summer, and it hooked me on the prologue. Thanks Becky Tipton, for the great suggestion!

This is a very slow moving book for me. While I'm connected to the characters, there are so many side stories that take away from the main story. It's difficult for me to read much of this at one sitting.
