The Scorpio Races started off slow for me, but it came highly recommended, so I stuck with it. I'm so glad that I did. Once I got to know both of the main characters and their motivations, I could hardly put the book down--the stakes were so high as the two prepared to race for everything important to them. I felt fully immersed in the magic of the water horses, the bond between human and horse, and the ancient traditions of the island. I've never read anything like this, and I loved it! ...more

It took some time for me to get into this book. It didn't sweep me into the plot like the other Maggie Stiefvater books did from the start. Once I was finally hooked, though, I began to love it. I think it took me until the 2 main characters let the reader in. ...more

Beautifully written. A retelling of the water horse mythology. This normally wouldn't catch my attention, but it was so well written that it captured me right away. ...more

Looking at reviews I am in the minority for not loving this book. I found out the water horses are based on mythology. I can tell that Stiefvater loves the myth and the area the myths arise. Apparently, there are several myths involving water horses and she picked what worked for her which I completely understand. She also focused on the community and how important the horses are to them. I just have more of a Hunger Games feeling that being drawn into a mythical world.

How did this book find me?

I did take me some time to get into this story. I had a hard time pictuing a horse swimming in the ocean and the pace of this story seemed a bit slower than the Mercy Falls series. I'm glad I did not give up on this book, not that it is in me not to finish a book. The last two pages did it for me. I thought I knew what was going to happen and I wasn't even close. Wow and thank you Ms. Stiefvater, is all I have to say. ...more
