Lonesome Dove is my all-time favorite book by an American author. It is technically the third book of a tetralogy, but you don't need to read the other books to understand and appreciate it. (But you SHOULD read the other books because they are almost equally wonderful.) Mr. McMurtry's characters are beautifully written. Lonesome Dove is a book that has followed me around since high school, but I was stubborn and decided that I didn't like Westerns. Goes to show we really don't know it all, because this is a genre I am beginning to appreciate. The settling of the West is my heritage. Lonesome Dove falls into the epic or modern classic. I'm now curious to watch the mini-series which has an excellent cast.
