I procrastinated picking up this book as the deadline for book group approached. I really avoid children-in-danger stories these days, and I knew that in the first little bit of this story the wife and child were sold by a drunk to a sailor. That said, this wasn't "bad things happen to good people" -- Elizabeth-Jane's last few paragraphs take a differend perspective on that, and one that is realistic if not actually worth parsing out to fully understa ...more
