Sookie is a waitress in a bar, living in a small town in Louisiana, Bon Temps, there is absolutely nothing extraordinary about her life, except for her "disability". She can read minds.

Vampires, vampires, vampires. It’s as if we’ll never escape this pale-faced fad ravaging googly-eyed fan girls and hardcore eyeliner wearers. Writers I’ve loved for years are suddenly publishing their shy little offerings to the Vampire Genre Gods. I’m pretty sure my mom is writing a vampire novel as we speak. How can this trampled, beloved, and frankly weird genre bring us something fresh, fun, and readable? By some miracle, the Sookie Stackhouse series with its prominent vampire characters, is Vampires, vampires, vampires. Now see here, I’m no expert about what came ‘before’ the hype and what came ‘after’, all I know is that “Dead Until Dark” makes a great read. Sookie Stackhouse’s character in all its blonde hilarity, narrates in such a way that the whole ‘vampire’ thing is just another ‘thing’. Her world also technically extends past vampires, but I don’t believe in snitching. The pacing is fast and unsentimental; there isn’t any vampire ‘brooding’ here. And the characters are just so likable. From Bill her vampire love interest to Sam her ‘something is weird’ boss, everyone has their own problems worth following.

“Dead Until Dark” has all the adventure, twists, and madness that do make it a perfect candidate for a TV show (cough cough “True Blood”). Even if you’ve seen/loved/hated the show, the book omits some of the soap-opera mama drama and has a really clean through plot. It’s worth reading, is what I’m saying. The book is also more sexually explicit than the show, if that is even possible, so I’m not recommending this to all of my Twilight homies who thought the Jacob-Bella-Edward thing was grody.

Part horror, murder mystery, romance, and supernatural thriller, this book is a juggling act of flaming brilliance. Sookie as the narrator masters the fine art of being cute but not obnoxious, and her adventures dating vampires and kissing ‘whatevers’ are filled with such a strange realism that you’ll be wondering if its non-fiction or not. In the case of “Dead Until Dark,” I push aside my pointy-toothed prejudice and recommend this book highly.

The way the characters are created in this new world of Fantasy is great. I feel in love with the small town feel of the town and all the characters
