I read the "Special Illustrated Edition" and it was a pretty good example of how to handle a very broad topic for a very broad audience, although the title is a little misleading - its really a history of all things science. One could make the usual statements - too much on this topic, too little on that, this was a tad too technical, that was dumbed down a bit too much - and, accounting for personal preferences, they would be largely correct. An immense and somewhat overstated book. A Short History of Nearly Everything is heralded as imminently readable and I beg to differ. This is not a book for those less well versed in the natural sciences. Nevertheless, I did enjoy it, and I tell you now, the title is not inaccurate. This is, quite literally, a history of nearly everything, from physics, cosmology, meteorology, geology, biology, and everything in between.
