The Sealed Letter is based on a real divorce trial, which took place in the mid 19th century in London. Our protagonist is known by her nickname, Fido, and she's a capable spinster who works tirelessly on behalf of women's rights and runs a printing firm that specifically employs women. When she runs into an old friend, Helen Codrington, with whom she lost touch when Helen and her husband went to live in Malta, Fido's peaceful life is soon turned upside down.

I did actually like this more than I thought I would, I enjoyed Room and I thought this wouldn't be as good but the way that the truth and fiction were merged is extremely believable and very clever and I did feel sympathy for poor Fido. ...more

easy to read book which I found interesting as it was partly based on fact - I was captivated by how different women were perceived in society and that men were given custody of children automatically
