The first half of the book is primarily the story of Jason Worthing and his descendants - and how they use (and do not use) their psychic powers. The main story is told in a series of "flashbacks" - actually dreams sent to Lared, a young man living on a pioneer colony planet many, many years after Jason and Abner Doon overthrew the Empire and started a new civilization.
