What Members Thought

This is a hard science fiction novel, and it has many elements that I enjoy in space opera: a far-future setting, with humans colonizing the galaxy at sub-light speeds, and contemplating the mysterious remains of a long-lost alien civilization.
The science and technology portions are well written, even if my eyes glazed over at some of the more intense astrophysics. I liked the descriptions of the space ships, and particularly their names: the Nostalgia for Infinity and the Melancholia of Departu ...more

This book should have been much better than it was. I thought I was going to love it after a very strong start but ultimately it was mediocre. I enjoyed the science and technology and thought the universe he created was very smart and well done but the slow pacing made me want to skim large chunks in the middle.
I will say that it was a much better book than some of the other modern space opera I've read recently from the likes of Scalzi and Stross, but still not quite good enough to make me rush ...more

Mini review: Michael Moorcock is said to have stated that "I think of myself as a bad writer with big ideas, but I would rather be that than a big writer with bad ideas." Something similar could be said for Alastair Reynolds in Revelation Space. This book is exactly what you would think you would get from a tech-geeky astrophysicist with a vivid imagination who has grown up on science fiction staples and now wants to try his wings. Unfortunately, no matter how big the ideas, a badly written book

It was a great story, but the writer’s habits really ruined it for me. There were many times when you could tell he didn't know where it was going, too many short cuts, and glaze over’s. but aside from that it was a really good story, if not a good read, I didn't even bother mentioning the other books in the series because well, it wasn't good enough for me to waste the time to find them and add them to the bookshelf.
