Decent military scifi, okay start of the series. I particularly liked the science of commanding and fighting while accounting for the time lag for signals to travel back and forth across light-seconds, light-minutes, etc. Other aspects of the story were less believable like the "banzai charge" style of fighting used by both opponents until Black Jack shows up. Okay, military science-fiction is always a selling point for me, and I have taken too long to get to this series.

It is always presented as a series, and with good reason. While this is a complete story, structure-wise, the overall situation and problem won't be resolved (presumably) until book six. The good news is that these are relatively short books by modern standards, coming in at ~300 pages each, so this isn't a six-book series of bloated editing.

He finds that he is a great hero who is revered and that the Alliance has become a lot harsher in its fighting, foolhardy without tactics, and still fighting the war that was started during the battle where he "died."

An excellent start to a military Science Fiction series. My only complaint would be that there were to many long conferences. The battles were great. one of the few series to focus on space ships engaged in battle as opposed to ground troops battles.

This is exactly the kind of sci-fi I like: set in space and portraying heroes. I wish there was a show like that on TV right now. I really liked John and the way he kept the whole fleet in check while aware of his own shortcomings and of the need to hide them. And I'm really curious about the possibility of a non-human life form they found. I'll definitely read the next book in the series. ...more

A really good read. I think the author did a good job of presenting an interesting view of how culture changes over time.
