Solid start to a series I've been meaning to try for a while. Good world building; the main character is a little "I'm so angry at the world and also very special," but hoping that will settle a bit as the series goes on.

Totally hooked me from the start which is what I was afraid of. I had been delaying reading this one due to it being 500 pgs and I haven't had the free time to loose a full day to a book recently. Well it had to go back to the library so I dug in anyway. Oh so wonderful, why are there pesky things like "sleep" and "work" that get in the way of reading? WHY? Wonderful characters and story. Kaylin grew up in the fiefs, the oldest and most dangerous parts of the city of Elantra. She escaped 7 years ago and tries never to think of her time there, she joined the Hawks and is now essentially a police officer. But a child is found dead in the fiefs, the same type of ritual murder that had been happening when she escaped, and somehow it's tied to the strange markings on her arms and legs. great book! interesting concept. a little slow in a couple of places, but very enjoyable. i could hardly put it down. can't wait to read the next two in the series
