This adaptation of Beauty and the Beast cuts out the merchant father and sisters mourning their sudden impoverishment. Instead of a formerly-wealthy beauty, our heroine is the recently-orphaned daughter of a professor. Highly educated herself, but lacking family or funds, she perforce accepts a position as a governess in far-away California. But it turns out there are no children, only a Beast who needs someone to translate some dead languages...

As the first in this series, though I've read other Elemental Masters books before, I'm glad Lackey's writing has improved since. (The cover is a little heh?, too.)
Anyhoo, Jason was an interesting character as I felt he was the most fleshed out character. Rose was given the main narrative voice, but still...she seemed a little too rational for my liking. (Or maybe that's just envy. :-P)

This is a masterfully crafted re-telling of the Beauty & Beast fairytale.
I loved this book ... except for the ending. No, the conclusion itself was wonderful. Rather, it was that the climax was practically the last page. Thank goodness for the Epilogue. But then again, that is one of the most useful manners of imploying an epilogue. The writer can jump ahead, wrap things up quickly and effectively, and 'review' the plotted events. I only wish it had been longer. ...more
