Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite fairy tale, and this retelling of the tale has been my favorite for quite some time. McKinley gives us a sensible, bookish protagonist, a magic castle with invisible servants, and a sensitive Beast. The journey to the wonderful ending is liberally sprinkled with many of McKinley's own touches, such as a huge library that makes Beauty jump up and down with happiness. A lovely book.

Beauty-as-bookworm has really resonated with me (gee, I wonder WHY). When she says "I've never seen so many books" in the Disney movie, I always get a bit sniffly. The dynamic between Beauty and Beast here is lovely... although having him turn out to be old(ish) at the end was a bit on the squicky side. One of my all-time favorite books.

The classic fairy tale, retold in the author's own unique style. And -- dare I say it -- totally hijacked by Disney in less than a decade.
