i really wanted to like this book. and it has plenty that's admirable - a variety of characters, distinct personalities, interesting science - but in the end, i just didn't care that much about any of them. the first 100 pages or so were difficult to get through, and after that it got *mildly* interesting.

why didn't i give up? well, i'm very patient. but also since i'd heard so many rave about this book, i kept hoping the good would come in. alas, for me, they never did. c'est la vie.
