I found this to be a very interesting and mostly enjoyable read, though occasionally mildly irritating in minor respects. Written before I was born, Ringworld stands the test of time remarkably well...if often feels so contemporary, in fact, that I had a hard time giving Niven grace for the inevitable gaps in his knowledge and outdated ideas. Louis Wu is selected by the Pierson's Puppeteers for a secret mission. He and his companions: Nessus (an insane puppeteer), Speaker to Animals (a warloving Kzin) and Teela Brown (another human bred for luck), are to explore an unusual world where the world is a ring that surrounds a sun. Incredibly huge to hold a large population.

i really wanted to like this book. and it has plenty that's admirable - a variety of characters, distinct personalities, interesting science - but in the end, i just didn't care that much about any of them. the first 100 pages or so were difficult to get through, and after that it got *mildly* interesting.
why didn't i give up? well, i'm very patient. but also since i'd heard so many rave about this book, i kept hoping the good would come in. alas, for me, they never did. c'est la vie. ...more
