This is a great story and an important turning-point in Miles' development as a character. However, it is probably one of the worst books to pick to start the series, as it picks up after some major events and presumes the reader knows what's going on.

On re-reading this series, I think that this is my favorite Miles Vorkosigan novel. This is the one where Miles turns 30, and as Bujold says, 30 hits back. It takes place entirely on Barrayar, where Miles returns after making a Really Bad Decision following a mission mishap. It’s another critical juncture of his life: the point at which he must choose between Admiral Naismith and Lord Vorkosigan.

I like to think of the Vorkosigan Saga as divided into 3 parts: pre-Miles, Miles-fight action, Miles-political action. My favorite of the Miles stories are the political action stories. I find them much more interesting than the shoot, fight, kill drama of the fight action. Don't get me wrong, there is actual action in the politically oriented stories as well. The deeper into The Vorkosigan Saga I get, the more impressed I am. It would be easy to just keep churning out clever adventure stories, but Bujold keeps raising the bar. In Mirror Dance, she killed Miles off (temporarily, of course), and both developed other characters on Miles' orbit and have us a different glimpse of him through their eyes. Now in Memory, we see the way that previous events continue to reverberate, and Miles screws himself very thoroughly, in a way that is very much in charac

I put off reading this book for months. I had read just enough of a summary to know that it was going somewhere painful that I wasn't at all sure that I wanted to go, and I was very nervous about how it would all turn out, despite my faith in Lois McMaster Bujold's skills as an author. However, I finally resolved to stop being a coward and read it this past week, and as I should have known, it wasn't nearly as painful as I anticipated. In fact, the biggest pain was putting the book down once I h

The bookish like have read before reading "A Civil Campaign" the first time. Excellent, solid Bujold. But don't start the series here if you can avoid it, as it will be hard to catch up on who's who.

It started off with a bang, then it slowed down for a bit before it really got going again. It's a transitional book in the series so I wouldn't recommend starting here, but out of the ones I've read so far it's one of my favorites (Barrayar being the other favorite).
