Beagle surprises me again with his poetic capability. This book is a lot of things - enchanting, romantic, intensely poetic and whimsical. Why not 5 stars then? It would've gotten a 5-star from me. I loved the talking raven, the two ghosts, the setting; the tone is both realistic and fantastical in a wonderfully dreamy yet relate-able way. A Fine and Private Place by Peter S. Beagle was his debut novel at the age of nineteen. I wish I could say I read it with that fact in mind, but I only discovered it while writing the reviews. The Black Gate blog post has more information on the history of the novel.

A warning to future readers: Do not read before sleeping, you will be thinking about it all night long. It leaves some things up in the air for you to figure out and it stays with you for awhile.
I wouldn't say it's the best book I ever read or close to it. But it is meaningful, enjoyable and makes you think. Definitely worth reading! ...more
