Without a doubt the first novel in HGthG is the best. But for once an author has written a series which you dont *need* to read all the parts to get the story, yet eack book is really still quite excellent and far from disappointing.
This is one of the only books that never fails to make me laugh out loud. The world is so completely bizarre and amazing yet the incredible cast of characters don't get swallowed up by its craziness because they somehow are even more bizarre.

Manages to combine hilarity and ridiculousness a la P.G. Wodehouse with fascinating philosophical concepts and Big Ideas in the way of the best science fiction.
