Dark space opera with an unusual narrative structure. The first Iain M. Banks novel I ever read, and still my favorite.
Man, what a gut shot at the end. I don't have great analytical review powers or abilities, but somehow Banks really, REALLY got me emotionally engaged with this book. Top notch characters all the way around.

A must-read for any science fiction fan. Someone should have told me how amazing this is.
I enjoyed two of his other books (which I should review) so I'll see if I can get to this one some time.
