I kind of feel like I’m giving this one an extra star on credit, because I think I would appreciate it considerably more on a second read. I appreciate that Ford is not the sort of author to hold your hand and overdo exposition, which is particularly notable considering it was written in the early 80s, even fantasy was not a particularly mature genre. Anyway, the flip side of this is that I definitely didn’t catch everything, reading in bits and pieces on my phone.

This is deep. I'm going to wait a while and read it again before I decide how much I liked it.

I know my Plantagenets and my Tudors, but I don't know anything about Byzantium or the Medici family and that's problematic. I did not discover the concordance until I was well into the book.
