I've owned this book for years but, partially because of the terrible cover art, could never bring myself to read it. I was pleasantly surprised however. It's a fairly traditional epic fantasy, with plenty of recognizable elements, but it is well-written and has a few more sophisticated elements that makes it a step above your average mass-market fantasy series. This series is addicting. the characters are well drawn, the storylines intricately woven together, and there is lots of suspense and action. It is sort of a merge of tolkien, Harry Potter, and star wars... minus the space ships.
Only read this book if you are willing to become addicted to a 12 vol. series of 500 page books. I am a slow reader, so this was quite a commitment.

Like most drugs once you try you can't stop without some serious intervention, I suggest you just don't try. It starts out good and then keeps going and going and the story just digresses until you want to hurt something (this is about the series, not this book).
