This was an incredibly enjoyable read. It is a little bit 'by the numbers' fantasy in that (at least so far) the good are good and the bad are bad. There is some disagreement, though, among the 'good' as to what is and isn't good--so it's not totally simplistic. The writing style is very quick and the characters, although often common fantasy types, are well drawn and interesting. Fitz's connection to animals is surprisingly touching as well, since I don't consider myself a person that is overly

I super wanted to love this book but I just... didn't. I liked it-- as the author notes herself, a 3 star rating is not bad, it means I finished the book and enjoyed it. The writing is good, as is the characterization, but there are so few prominent women and basically no POC, and it just didn't feel like it had anything new to offer me. I remember reading Ship of Magic in college and liking it, so maybe I'll go back and finish that trilogy, bc I want to enjoy Robin Hobb as she clearly deserves.

Enjoyed this, and the whole series, a lot more than I expected to. Strong plotting, great characterization, world-building that is both thorough and unobtrusive (a rare combination), and, maybe most unusually for the genre, a powerful, flexible command of language, on a sentence by sentence level, to the point that it is what we might call "literary." I mean, she's no James Joyce or anything, but she could certainly give John Irving a run for his money.

I liked this book a lot. The main character is interesting, though I would wish him to be a bit more proactive. Still, he's a young character, so I'm very much looking forward to the sequels.

A recommendation from a friend. Like Mortal Suns, this is a memoir in a fantasy land. An old man is telling the sad story of his youth as an orphaned bastard in a royal keep. The unrelenting grimness almost turned me off, but the narrative and story are interesting as the world is built little by little and the adventures begin. It's the first of a trilogy and I've put a hold on its sequel too - must be my month for orphans. (July 14, 2005)
