This is a riveting book, and I lost myself easily in the smooth writing. But it reminds me of a stage play, or an old BBC television drama where you have to overlook the fact that the battle is being fought with 12 extras. There aren't enough characters in the book to make the world seem viable. But in exchange for that kind of realism the author includes a lot of little details in Fitz's experiences that I very much appreciate. Even better than the last. This book took a much darker, more complex turn than the previous one, which gave it a bit more depth. It was a little infuriating how dense Fitz could be (had to keep reminding myself he was supposed to be a teenager) because I could see things coming a mile away that he couldn't (which, clearly, was intentional since all of the other characters saw it coming as well and were equally annoyed with him). I liked the first book in the series, but I just couldn't get through this one. I may try to read the series again later. I think I just wasn't in the mood for a whiny, indecisive hero.
