In the Hand of the Goddess directly follows the plot from Alanna The First Adventure. Alanna is still a squire disguised as a boy. The book follows her through her first battles, the Ordeal of Knighthood, and her show down with the evil Roger of Conte.
I can sympathize with those who feel that the book often jumps forward skipping moments that we would like to see, but I enjoy many of the characters so much that I can easily overlook any flaws. This series has brought out my love of adventure and ...more

A bit hard to rate. The story is well-told and kept me eagerly turning pages, yet it was a little too predictably structured.
It does stand on its own, but I would really consider it "Part 2" of Alanna, as most of the plot elements are direct continuations of things set up in the first book. The first one follows page Alan, and this one follows squire Alan. pierce's characters and energy carry the day once again. the pacing is off on this one - too much happens too fast. i have a feeling that if pierce were writing today, this book would have been much longer. i imagine at 25+ years ago, there was little support for longer YA fiction and that she was kept to strictly under 300 pages.
still, alanna's adventures are a delight. perhaps it's the nostalgia factor, but i really do love being with these characters. ...more

Alanna's "secret" is clearly not as secret as she thinks it is. The older she gets the more among her friends and colleagues who figure it out. But she's useful, brave, loyal, and smart. Rules can be bent to keep someone like her around.
