I didn't really need to read this, as it turns out.
I'd already read the second volume, and there was basically nothing in this that wasn't described adequately there. I was surprised at how much of the book passed before the magicians found Sonea and took her to the school. Pretty slow, really, with more background than necessary. I liked Sonea and Cery and Rothen as characters but was kind of bored. The High Lord, who is central to the plot of book two, hardly appears in this. ...more

First of a trilogy, this book is a scarce rare one. A book recommended to me by the one person I hate the most. My mother. I tried to hate this book because she makes me feel worthless. Despite all that, this is a wonderful book that is easy to follow and grips you tightly. It demands you turn off the TV and read the whole thing. It draws you into caring for the characters.. a rare treat that makes us readers wade through lots of crap stories to find those hidden gems. So.. double whammy recomme

This book falls into the category of sci-fi/fantasy books I probably would have enjoyed more had I read them as a teenager. I found the pacing in this one to be particularly slow...it picks up a bit in the following two books in the series. There's nothing particularly original here, though, for anyone very familiar with the genre. The Harry Potter series covers a lot of the same ground, but much better and with far greater detail.
