When I read the back of this book, I thought wow; sounds like the Heralds of Valdemar, and if you point out some generalities, it sounds even more so. Young heroine, special horses, magical abilities, messengers for the king. Wow, sounds familiar--Talia--young heroine, special horses--companions, magical abilities--mind magic, messengers for the king--heralds act as messengers. But that's where the similarities end unless you want to add good writing, characterization, and plot to the mix.

This was.. alright.
I think I would have loved it as a teenager, but I really didn't connect with any of the characters. The only two I really liked were the two batty old women who were, sadly, not in it enough. Oh, and the horse. He was great.

It was ok, but I think this is fantasy for a more feminine audience. R.A. Salvatore and Robert E. Howard are more my kind of fantasy writers.

Very nice novel for those who like a storytelling adventure with colorful characters and a bit of magic. The world is beautifully built with nice attention to details.
All these years later and I still love this story and this MC.
