This book read like a high schooler wrote it. A plot devoid of any surprises and full of completely flat characters made for an incredibly long and painful reading experience.

Wizard's First Rule is the first book in the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The Sword of Truth series is an awesome fantasy series, but this book is probably my favorite of all of them. I don't know how many times I've read this one. If you are a fantasy fan and haven't read this series, you are missing out. I highly recommend this book and this series.

Wizard's First Rule is the first book in the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The Sword of Truth series is an awesome fantasy series, but this book is probably my favorite of all of them. I don't know how many times I've read this one. If you are a fantasy fan and haven't read this series, you are missing out. I highly recommend this book and this series.

This is the book that started it all, and it really has everything that a fantasy reader would want: interesting settings, magic, romance, quests, a really evil bad guy, twists and turns, and so much more! The book is fast-paced and doesn't feel like a large fantasy book. Yes, the reader gets the standard good versus evil plot, but for some reason, this book doesn't feel as stale as other fantasy books I've read.

In this book, we are introduced to Richard Cypher, a hunky woodsman with a strong moral compass. We also are introduced to Kahlan Amnell, a beautiful woman with some pretty big secrets. Together, along with an eccentric Obi-Wan like wizard, they travel across a thrilling landscape, meeting interesting groups and running into magical things. Darken Rahl makes an interesting evil bad guy. You really root against him and cheer on Richard and Kahlan.

I really like this series because it doesn't feel long and drawn out like some other sets of fantasy series that I can think of. Goodkind is actually a pretty good writer and the pacing felt pretty good for a book that is pretty long. In a way, it is standard fantasy: magic, wizards, creatures, good versus evil. But the characters seem a little fresher and Goodkind puts a darker twist as a part of his unique style.

I love, love, love, love, love this book. It gets better with each read. :-) I highly recommend it to fantasy fans, but I think even people who aren't into the genre may be able to appreciate some of the other aspects of the story: the romance, the adventure, etc. Five stars. ...more

This first book of the Wizard's First Rule series is inarguably the best, in terms of the way it just grabs you and holds you and makes you love the characters and want to know how everything works out for them in the end. That's why I keep coming back, no matter how much the series lags towards the end, I am emotionally invested in Richard, Kahlan, Zed, and the rest of the gang. ...more

I really vacillated on whether I liked this book. I don't think that the quality of the prose is very good, but the story is great. I would find myself annoyed by how poorly put a passage had been--and then forget because I was caught up in the story. I'm starting the second book in the series now, but am not sure how far I'll get. ...more

I have to admit that I wasn't very impressed with the first book in this series. I actually think that this is the weakest of the books. The series does get better, as it strays away from the standard fantasy motiff. Don't get me wrong, I would still call these books fantacy. ...more
