While there's a few places where this makes some debut mistakes, it's obvious that Kay's got talent and an eye for details and world building (sometimes to the detriment of his storytelling in this first novel).

Still, while it takes a while to get rolling, it's fabulous when it does so. Eagerly diving into Book 2!

I just re-read this book because after reading Tigana and loving it so much, I decided I wanted to finish this trilogy. I didn't change my star-rating on the second time through--still four stars. Kay has a gift for transposing current themes that resonate onto a fully-realized fantasy realm (although this do ...more

I had a hard time getting into this one at first. The 5 modern-day, Canadian college students were barely introduced and were never really fleshed out as individuals, so I had a hard time caring about how they reacted to the fantasy world into which they are transported (which seems to be no big deal to them somehow). However, the situation in the fantasy world gets exciting pretty quickly and introduces a fairly interesting set of characters. I ended up really enjoying the middle part of the bo ...more

The me of 1997, still high off of Tigana, would have given it 5 stars. But I reread it recently, and it is now a little too flowery and over wrought for me to give a prefect rating to. but give it a shot-- overall it is lovely.
