While there's a few places where this makes some debut mistakes, it's obvious that Kay's got talent and an eye for details and world building (sometimes to the detriment of his storytelling in this first novel).
Still, while it takes a while to get rolling, it's fabulous when it does so. Eagerly diving into Book 2!

I am a huge fan of Guy Gavriel Kay's writing, and this is the first book of his I ever read. I am just in love with the way he uses language, as well as the way he can take familiar elements of old stories and make them fresh and new again. I read all of his books over and over again, just to bask in his words and the worlds he creates.

I just re-read this book because after reading Tigana and loving it so much, I decided I wanted to finish this trilogy. I didn't change my star-rating on the second time through--still four stars. The book owes a lot to Lord of the Rings (angry forests, elf-like race that is leaving to a distant land, etc..) but it also has a depth of character that Tolkien never really accomplished. I had a hard time getting into this one at first. The 5 modern-day, Canadian college students were barely introduced and were never really fleshed out as individuals, so I had a hard time caring about how they reacted to the fantasy world into which they are transported (which seems to be no big deal to them somehow).
