Hmm. I didn't love this one like I wanted to. Part of it, I think, is that I am not Dauntless, so when the kids (and adults) are doing stupid and risky things, I'm sitting there wondering what in the world is wrong with them. Likewise with the tattoos. Likewise with the nasty and cruel acts. I spent a lot of time sitting back, wondering what was wrong with these people. It's said that there was some big war and the only way that people stopped fighting was through dividing into the factions, and ...more

Fairly ridiculous premise, but a fun read. In a city of factions that each emphasize one virtue, Beatrice is one of the initiates that makes the leap from her home faction of Abnegation to the Dauntless faction of danger, death and beating the crap out of each other. i should give this two stars, because holey deus ex machina batman. i think if i had read this before seeing a trailer for the movie, i would have been vomitous. but reading this as if it is a film treatment, it was fun enough. this is a clunky book, though it has a few charms.

2.5 stars

A fast-paced read in the spirit of The Hunger Games. I read it in a day and loved every minute.
